The Commencement of the production of auto parts

The beginning of auto parts production by Hyundai International marks the very beginning of the auto parts industry in Korea.
Hyundai International manufactured functional parts including press parts, heaters, and engine radiators, locally producing electronic parts, shock absorbers, and air conditioners, which had solely relied on import.

Changwon Comprehensive Machinery Plant

Hyundai International broke ground for a large-scale comprehensive machinery plant in November 1976 with a total investment of $320 million. The largest project in the history of the nation that included facilities for power generation, steelmaking, oil refining, and chemical industry, the project provided a secure footing for the construction of massive machinery production sites.

Completion of the Gunpo Comprehensive Machinery Plant

The Gunpo Plant became the greatest machinery plant in Korea after completing its heavy machinery plant and extending its foundry.
As a site of production for auto parts, heavy construction equipment, and industrial plant machines, the Gunpo Plant acted as the outpost of the Korean machinery industry.

Founded Incheon Co., Ltd.

Incheon Co., Ltd., which started as a small-scale ship repair business at the beginning of its establishment, expanded its shipbuilding scale to mid-to-large-sized ships in the 1980s, and participated in shipbuilding for overseas orders. In June 1990, the company name was changed to Halla Heavy Industries & Construction.

Won a turnkey contract for Jizan Cement Plant, Saudi Arabia

This was the country’s very first offshore order for a turnkey project. It was one of the greatest milestones in Korean construction history as we were responsible for the design of a massive plant, manufacture and supply of facilities, construction, and performance guarantee even after the completion of the plant.

The Establishment of Halla Cement Corp.

Halla Cement was officially founded in 1978 after it was first formed as a business division at Hyundai International. Halla Cement secured productivity and competitiveness by completing the Okgye Cement Plant and Okgye Port.

Anyang Plant renamed Mando Machinery

The Anyang Plant changed the name into Mando Machinery and began growing into a manufacturer specialized in auto parts. The name Mando carries a double meaning, “Spreading to 10,000 cities worldwide,” and “A man can do [it].” The company spurred the development of proprietary technology by founding a research institute in 1984.

The Establishment of Halla Resources

A former Department of Resource Development at Hyundai International, this group split from the company to become Halla Resources, a predecessor of Halla Corporation. Halla Resources was later re-established as a company mainly engaged in log development and trade, while Halla Construction led the national SOC business and expanded private-sector projects, such as apartment construction.

The Foundation of Halla Climate Control Corporation

Halla Climate Control Corporation was a 50:50 joint venture company with Mando Machinery and Ford. It was a heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) company that had acquired competitiveness not only in the national market but also in the global market. It began mass production of aluminum radiators and expanded production to air conditioners and heaters for cars in 1988.

The Establishment of Baedal School

Baedal School was authorized to be organized into an educational foundation in 1990, a school founded by Honorary Chairman, Chung In-yung to educate young talent and to contribute to society. The Halla technical junior college established by Baedal School developed into Halla Engineering College and then into Halla University. Today, Halla University aims to become a school that grows alongside neighboring universities and students.

Build Meister Inc.

The Halla Group set up Meister Inc. in 1991 and advanced into the general auto service field, which includes a nationwide auto maintenance chain. In 2013, Meister was renamed Halla Meister and was then incorporated into Halla Holdings in 2014 as a business division. Today, the division is responsible for the distribution, logistics, and service of the Halla Group.

The Construction of Central R&D Center, Mando Machinery

In 1993, Mando Machinery finished the construction of the 89,256 m2 Central R&D Center for auto parts featuring a driving test site in Deokso. Deokso Central R&D Center was developed into a state-of-the-art research center, as an active response to the latest developments in vehicle electrification, advanced functionality, environmental pollution control, and lightweight cars. The center also expanded the target of research, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) studies, and the evaluation of cars in real-world scenarios.

The Foundation of the Winia Mando Ice Hockey team

The Winia Mando Ice Hockey team was created with the goal of broadening the base of ice hockey in Korea, returning corporate profit to society, and contributing to local communities. The team was renamed Halla Winia in 3004 and Anyang Halla in 3005. Afterwards, the Anyang Halla Ice Hockey Club grew into the most renowned team with unrivaled performance in the Asian League and has won three consecutive championships, recording the highest five wins in the history of the league.

Halla Heavy Industries launching ceremony for Samho Shipyard

Halla Heavy Industries held its first launching ceremony in 1996 at Samho Shipyard. Samho Shipyard became one of the top shipyards in the world with an annual shipbuilding capacity of 300 ships. At the ceremony, 2,500 TEU class containerships ordered from Germany and a 40,000-ton petroleum product carrier ordered from Singapore were launched together.

The Completion of the construction of a heavy equipment plant in Wales

In 1997, a plant was built in Wales, England, with an annual production capacity of 6,000 items of heavy construction equipment. A building dedication ceremony was attended by Queen Elizabeth, Honorary Chairman, Chung In-yung, along with officials from two countries.

The Foundation of the Mokpo Newport Terminal

1997, the company initiated the Mokpo Newport Terminal business with the goal of developing the port into a central port in Northeast Asia. The port prospered and by 2005, it was handling 1 million tons of cargo. Now, it is a regional hub for automobile exports and imports of stone, steel, and logs.

The Announcement of restructuring plans

Amid the devastating Asian financial crisis in 1998, the Halla Group announced its restructuring plan to resume normal operations by attracting foreign capital. Through this process, Halla Group divided the heavy industry and major auto parts companies from the group, including Halla Heavy Industries, Mando Machinery, Halla Climate Control Corporation, Halla Pulp Paper, and Halla Cement

Mando became the first company in Korea to develop and produce ABS

Mando developed and mass-produced anti-lock braking systems (ABS) for cars for the first time in the nation. This was made possible by making a hefty investment of 50 billion won for eight years since it first began developing control logic, a central component of ABS technology. Mando named its proprietary model MGH, the initials for the national flower in Korean, Mugunghwa, or the rose of Sharon.

Halla Corporation breaks ground for mooring at Incheon International Airport

Halla Corporation strengthened its business capabilities even in the middle of the Asian financial crisis as it centered its focus on building national infrastructure, including roads, ports, airports, and residential areas. It built a solid foundation in the airport construction sector, by winning a series of contracts for Incheon International Airport, Uljin Airport, Jeju International Airport, and other facilities.

The Signing of a contract to acquire Mando shares

In 2008, the Halla Group took over Mando, an auto parts company, after a period of nine years. This was a starting point for the Halla Group to re-establish the company.

Completed construction of the Songdo Plant for Mando-Hella Electronics Corp.

Mando co-founded A 50:50 joint venture with a German company, Hella, in response to vehicle electrification. This helped the company to prepare a production base for ECU sensors for brake and steering system controls and to follow the worldwide trend of embracing electric cars.

Anyang Halla becomes the 2009-2010 champion in the Asian League

Anyang Halla Ice Hockey Club wins the 2009-2010 Asian League in 2010, achieving the remarkable feat of making two consecutive wins in the Asian League.

Founded MandoBrose

Mando set up a company, MandoBrose, specialized in car motors in 2011 as a 50:50 venture company with Brose from Germany. With this venture, Mando aimed to secure motor element technology and establish a stable supply of motor parts.

Built the Mando Global R&D Institute

In 2012, Mando’s R&D body moved to the Pangyo R&D Center. The move enabled Mando to respond quickly to the rapid shift to vehicle electrification and intelligent technologies. Today, Mando is continuing its innovation to be recognized as a technology powerhouse by leading the cutting-edge technologies based on the Global R&D Institute.

Halla Corporation Constructs the Pyeongtaek-Siheung Expressway

Halla Corporation was the main constructor for the construction project of the Section 1, 2nd West Coast Expressway between Pyeongtaek and Siheung. The Pyeongtaek-Siheung 2nd West Coast Expressway is the first privately funded SOC project conducted without the minimum operating income guarantee (MRG) by the government. Today, Halla Corporation is particularly strong in building a variety of infrastructure, including tunnels, ports, and highways.

Founding of the Halla Human Resources Development Center

Halla HRD Center is the home of human resources development, where we build the solid base for growth in the Halla Group, a place where the new future begins. The Halla HRD Center has different learning facilities and healing spaces designed to awaken our employee’s passion for both learning and working. At the Woon Gok Hall, a small museum built in memory of the founder and the Honorary Chairman Chung In-yung, you can see the history of the Halla Group starting from the early days and continuing up to the present.

Mando builds Georgia Plant in the US

Mando completed its 2nd North American plant with a production capacity of 600,000 units per year in Georgia, US. The plant has an annual production capacity of 600,000 units of electronic stability control (ESC) and 170,000 units of rack-assist electric power steering (R-EPS). The volume of R-EPS production has since increased to over 1 million units a year. The Georgia plant has allowed Mando to proactively respond to the demands of GM and Chrysler for more advanced products.

Halla Holdings launched

Halla Holdings was founded in 2014. The company is responsible for managing the subsidiaries of the Halla Group and investments in new businesses at the group level.

The Sale of 6,700 homes in the Baegot new town

Baegot is one of the largest new town project conducted by Halla Corporation in the city of Siheung. Halla Corporation built a large-scale apartment complex with over 6,700 homes inside a specially planned zone in the new town of Baegot. The company also constructed a smart campus for the Seoul University Siheung Campus.

Mando Mexico Plant kicks off production

Mando initiated the production of its Mexico Plant, as a production base for the US and the Latin American market. The Mexico Plant manufactures all three flagship products from Mando: brakes, steering, and suspension devices.

Successful test driving of Level 4 autonomous vehicles

Mando’s self-driving car, Hockey, successfully completed a Level 4 test run. Level 4 autonomy means that a vehicle can reach its destination without any intervention from a human driver. Hockey has had favorable responses from both inside and outside the company as it achieved full autonomy, which enables safe driving even on congested urban roads.

Mando, the first in the world to mass-produce electric SbW

In 2020, Mando declared that it will mass-produce electric signal type intelligent steering by wire (SbW) systems. The SbW system completely detaches the steering wheel from the wheels and lets electric signals control the direction of the vehicle. SbW is a mandatory part in fully autonomous driving and is also seen as a key solution for future cars.

Mando ranked 74th place in the Forbes World's Best Employers list

Mando ranked 74th in the list of the World's Best Employers by Forbes. This is the eighth highest ranking for any global automaker under 12 automotive categories among the top 100 companies. Mando was the only auto parts maker in the list excluding tire manufacturers.

Winning the Innovation Award in CES 2021

Mando received the CES Innovation Award in 2021 for its electric signal type intelligent SbW system. SbW is an ingenious new technology that has solved the complex, 120-year-old problem of separating the upper unit from the lower unit of a vehicle.

The Establishment of Halla REITs Management

The Halla Group set up a real estate investment and management company, Halla REITs Management, in 2021. The group plans to connect real estate with finance and provide REITs products that meet customer needs.

Mando wins a Volkswagen contract for 50 million suspension units

Mando entered into a contract for over 50 million suspension units for Volkswagen. This is the largest order for a single item (suspension) in history, for which Mando is set to produce and supply a maximum of 6 million suspension units annually by 2033 in Europe.

Establishment of HL Klemove

Mando’s autonomous driving technology meets auto electronic parts maker Mando Hella Electronics (MHE) to launch a company specializing in autonomous driving and mobility. HL Klemove will move forward the era of fully autonomous driving with the convergence of advanced cognition and decision-making technology for autonomous driving with Mando’s chassis control technology.

Winning the Innovation Award in CES 2022

Mando Corporation, company specializing in EV and self-driving solutions, was awarded Innovation Award at the CES 2022. Mando’s latest entry, which won the Innovation Award in the VIT (vehicle intelligence & transportation) category is the IDB2 HAD (integrated dynamic brake for highly autonomous driving, IDB2 HAD for short).

Mando achieved cumulative production of 50 million units of Mando EPS!

EPS was first mass-produced in the Wonju Plant in Korea starting from July 2004, and in May 2022, the cumulative production of EPS(Electric Power Steering) exceeded 50 million units in the Georgia Plant in the United States. After consecutively securing production hubs in Korea (Wonju), China (Suzhou), the US (Georgia), India (Chennai) and Mexico (Saltillo) over the past 18 years, Mando is currently producing EPS in 5 countries.

Halla Group Changes Corporate Name to HL ("Higher Life") Group in Celebration of 60th Anniversary

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, Halla Group changed its corporate name to HL ("Higher Life"), which stands for its pursuit of higher life. Halla Group had retained its corporate name for 38 years since the launch of the Halla brand in 1984. HL will serve as the new name for the group. HL Group's origins date back to the founding of Hyundai International Inc. in 1962 by the late Chung In-yung.

HL Klemove’s new company building ‘Next M’ Opened in Pangyo

A new company building with 12 floors above ground and 5 floors below the ground, ‘Next M’ opened in Pangyo 2nd Techno Valley. NextM is the headquarters of HL Klemove, and serves as a strategic business center and global R&D center that oversees commercialization around the world.

HL Group New CI won iF Design Award 'Grand Prize'

HL Group has won the 'Grand Prize' in the Company Branding category at the iF Design Awards 2023 organized by the German International Forum Design Company. HL Group has changed its name and CI to commemorate its 60th anniversary in September 2022, meaning to reflect on history and prepare for the future. The newly launched brand is HL (Higher Life), which means to pursue a higher life. Along with the CI, the group symbol Stride was also unveiled. The Stride, which is shaped like "waliking boldly, leaping forward," captures the group's identity, HL's legacy, as well as the present and future of the group.

HL Group Wins 'Gold Award' at Korea Digital Advertising Festival 2023 with "Open the Way to Freedom" Campaign

HL Group won the gold prize in the marketing and campaign promotion categories of "2023 Korea Digital Advertising Awards (KODAF 2023)." HL Group paid attention to promoting HL's technology more easily through this year's digital campaign. The short form film, which was connected to the campaign with everyday episodes, garnered 3.3 million views and attracted more than 212,000 MZ generation participants.

HL Mando, suspension production Exceeded 200 million units

HL MANDO, a global suspension manufacturer, has surpassed 200 million units in production. It has supplied parts to various automakers, including Hyundai Motor Group, over the past 50 years since it localized the suspension for the first time in Korea in 1972. If you stand in a line, it is about 840,000 kilometers, which is enough to go around the world 12 times.

CES 2024 ‘Parkie’ won Best Innovation Award, ‘Beetle·Tire-sync’ won Innovation Award

At CES 2024, the world's largest IT exhibition for home appliances, HL Mando won the CES ‘Best Innovation Award’ with his self-driving parking robot "Parkie." HL Klemove "Beetle" won the CES Best Innovation Award in two categories: Mobile Devices, Accessories & Apps category and the Smart Cities category, while "Tire-Sync" won the CES ‘Innovation Award’ in Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility.
